The Chaga Mushroom

The Chaga Mushroom

The Chaga Mushroom. Looks tasty, right?

When I think of mushrooms, this image definitely isn’t the first to pop up in my mental Google search. If you’re like me, your memories of mushrooms include things like Cambell’s Cream of Mushroom soup or those things your dog ate in the back yard that would make it barf all over your mom’s azaleas. That’s not what we’re talking about here.

The Chaga mushroom (or Inonotus obliquus, if you want to get fancy) is a natural health supplement known as the “Gift from God,” the “Diamond of the Forest,” and “King of Plants.” Ever heard of it? Me neither. This master of mushrooms has, until very recently, only been utilized in Asian cultures and communities and has been fairly unknown in North America. (No wonder our Asian friends look like they’re 20 until they’re 50!) Well, the future of Chaga is here and I’m here to tell you about it.

What Is The Chaga Mushroom?

Unlike a common soft mushroom, Chaga is wood-like—hard, like the bark of a tree. It is a tree growth, and one of the most unique in the world. As far as nutrition goes, Chaga is the densest of all others in its mushroom family and has been used by humans for its nutrients for thousands of years. Since it is found mostly in harsh climates, Chaga mushrooms must concentrate its natural compounds, in order to survive. It has a symbiotic relationship with its host tree—providing strength and healing through phytochemicals such as phenols, enzymes, and sterols.

Tons of Nutrition

It’s all about the nutrients. Chaga mushrooms concentrate B vitamins, flavonoids, phenols, minerals, and enzymes to help some trees live longer than ten millennia. Chaga also contains high concentrations of calcium, copper, potassium, iron, zinc, and manganese. These nutrients, working together with special enzymes, help stop oxidation and halt free radicals.

Increased Longevity

Chaga supports the entire body’s system. We need only look to the Siberians who drink it daily, to see the incredible longevity effects. They live on average 85 to 100 years! While non Chaga-drinkers, in Siberia, live only around half that. Why so powerful? It’s the phytochemicals. More information on some of the specific health properties can be found here on a blog post written by Paul Stamets.
